2009 Summer Schedule

Tim Whalen Nonet - Aug 12th

"Tim Whalen is a serious improviser."
                                             – Tom Laskin, Isthmus Newspaper

After many years of hard work in the trenches of the jazz world, Tim Whalen finally decided the time was right to release an album.  In July 2008, the Tim Whalen Nonet celebrated the release of Magnus, which was recorded live over the course of 4 nights in late 2006 and 2007 and gives the listener a vivid glimpse of a truly great live jazz ensemble.

Since its debut in October of 2002, this band has amazed audiences all over the region, and continues to be a fresh canvas for Tim's fresh and innovative compositions.  Whalen has formed a hard-swinging, unique band that plays with the intricacy of a big band but maintains the freedom of a small group.  Madison’s Capital Times Newspaper named their performance at the 2003 Isthmus Jazz Festival in Madison the "Jazz Performance of the Year".

"Whalen is pursuing a master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, but pray he moves back to Madison.  His nine-piece ensemble exemplified the art of the arranger in straight-ahead jazz."

                                                           – Kevin Lynch, The Capital Times

Tim currently is a visiting assistant professor of Jazz Piano at the University of Toledo in Ohio, where he teaches jazz improvisation, jazz composition and arranging, jazz history, and private lessons in jazz piano.  He also co-directs the Jazz Vocalstra with the legendary Jon Hendricks. Needless to say, the future has arrived for Tim Whalen.
